Kishore Kumar was born as Abhas Kumar Ganguly on August 4, 1929, in Khandwa, Central Provinces, British India (present-day Madhya Pradesh, India) to Kunjalal Ganguly (father) and Gouri Devi (mother). His father was a lawyer while his mother was a homemaker. He had three elder brothers: Ashok Kumar, Anoop Kumar, and Sati Devi. He was interested in music and singing from a young age and learned to play the harmonium and tabla. He also imitated the styles of famous singers like K. L. Saigal and S. D. Burman.

Early life and family background




Kishore Kumar was born into a Bengali Brahmin family that had a strong connection with the arts and entertainment industry. His eldest brother, Ashok Kumar, was a famous actor and producer who introduced him to the film world. His second brother, Anoop Kumar, was also an actor and singer who often worked with him. His sister, Sati Devi, was a singer and married to Sashadhar Mukherjee, a film producer and director. His uncle, Dhananjay Bannerjee, was a classical singer who taught him music.


Acting and singing debut




Kishore Kumar made his acting debut in 1946 with the film Shikari, in which he played the role of Ashok Kumar's younger brother. He also sang his first song, "Marne Ki Duayen Kyon Mangu", for the film Ziddi in 1948. However, he was not very keen on acting and wanted to pursue singing as his career. He was greatly influenced by K. L. Saigal, whom he considered his idol and mentor. He tried to imitate his style and voice in his early songs.

Rise to fame and collaborations




Kishore Kumar rose to fame in the 1950s and 1960s with his songs for films such as Nau Do Gyarah, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Half Ticket, Jhumroo, Padosan, Aradhana, Kati Patang, Amar Prem, and many more. He worked with some of the most renowned music directors of that era such as S. D. Burman, R. D. Burman, Shankar-Jaikishan, Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Kalyanji-Anandji, etc. He also formed a successful partnership with Rajesh Khanna, the superstar of Hindi cinema, and sang many hit songs for him such as "Roop Tera Mastana", "O Mere Dil Ke Chain", "Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana", etc. He also collaborated with other actors such as Amitabh Bachchan, Dev Anand, Dharmendra, Shashi Kapoor, etc.


Awards and recognition




Kishore Kumar won eight Filmfare Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, which is a record that he shares with Mohammad Rafi. He also received many other awards and honors such as the Lata Mangeshkar Award, the Madhya Pradesh Government Award, the Bengal Film Journalists' Association Award, etc. He was also awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1985 for his contribution to Indian cinema and music.


Personal life and death




Kishore Kumar was married four times in his life. His first wife was Ruma Guha Thakurta, a Bengali actress and singer whom he married in 1950 and divorced in 1958. They had a son named Amit Kumar who is also a singer and actor. His second wife was Madhubala, a famous actress whom he married in 1960 and remained with until her death in 1969. They had no children together. His third wife was Yogeeta Bali, another actress whom he married in 1976 and divorced in 1978. They had no children together either. His fourth wife was Leena Chandavarkar, yet another actress whom he married in 1980 and stayed with until his death in 1987. They had a son named Sumit Kumar who is also a singer.


Kishore Kumar died on October 13, 1987 at the age of 58 due to a heart attack at his home in Mumbai. He was cremated at the Khandwa Crematorium in his hometown.
