THE IAN McCLURG PLAY PRO METHODOLOGY™

Developing Better Players Through Individual Development

Inspired by Coerver Coaching. Influenced by Cruyff Football. Built for the Modern Game.

Why I Believe Every Player Deserves Individual Development

Over the past 25 years, I have worked with thousands of young footballers across Canada and internationally. During that time, one question has always driven my coaching philosophy:

How can we help every player maximize their potential, regardless of where they currently sit within the talent pathway?

Early in my coaching career, I was fortunate to work with many of the top players in provincial and academy programs. However, I also witnessed talented players being released because they were not yet considered among the "best" players in their age group.

That experience shaped my thinking.

I became fascinated by the idea that player development is not fixed. Great players are developed through purposeful practice, quality coaching, and a commitment to continuous improvement.

As a result, the Ian McClurg Play Pro methodology evolved through the influence of two football philosophies that have had a profound impact on me:

Coerver Coaching's individual player development model and the football principles of Johan Cruyff.

While these approaches originated in different environments, together they provide the foundation for everything we do at Play Pro.

The Coerver Influence: Developing the Individual

When I first discovered Coerver Coaching, I immediately connected with its focus on technical excellence. Created by Dutch coach Wiel Coerver, the methodology was built around a simple belief:

Better players make better teams.

Rather than beginning with tactics, formations, or systems of play, Coerver focused on developing the individual player first.

The methodology emphasizes:

  • Ball mastery

  • First touch

  • 1v1 attacking skills

  • Passing and receiving

  • Finishing

  • Speed of execution

  • Confidence in possession

These principles resonated with me because they addressed the area where many players were lacking.

Too often players were participating in team training but not accumulating enough quality repetitions to truly accelerate technical development.

At Play Pro, we continue to place tremendous emphasis on:

Ball Mastery

Players cannot play fast if they cannot control the football.

We encourage players to accumulate thousands of touches every week through structured individual training.

Technical Repetition

Elite players perform technical actions automatically because they have repeated them thousands of times.

Our sessions focus on creating high-quality repetitions that build consistency and confidence.

Position-Specific Technical Development

Modern football demands different technical requirements for different positions.

A central midfielder, fullback, winger and striker all require unique technical profiles.

Our training reflects these positional demands.

Individual Responsibility

One of the greatest lessons from Coerver Coaching is that development belongs to the player.

The best players take ownership of their improvement and continue working long after organized team training has finished.

The Cruyff Influence: Understanding the Game

While Coerver helped shape my approach to technical development, Johan Cruyff profoundly influenced how I view football itself.

Cruyff believed football was not simply about technical ability.

It was about understanding space, movement, decision-making and creating advantages.

His famous quote remains one of the most powerful lessons in football:

"Technique is not being able to juggle a ball 1,000 times. Technique is passing the ball with one touch, with the right speed, at the right foot of your teammate."

Cruyff's philosophy teaches us that technical skills must always serve the game.

At Ian McClurg Play Pro, we use this thinking to help players understand not just how to execute a skill, but when and why to use it.

Key Cruyff Principles Within Our Methodology

Play With Your Head Up

Modern football is becoming faster every year.

The best players process information before they receive the ball.

This is why scanning and awareness are integrated into our sessions.

Create and Exploit Space

Football is fundamentally a game of space.

Players must learn how to:

  • Create space

  • Recognize space

  • Move into space

  • Exploit space

These concepts are trained through position-specific scenarios and game-related exercises.

Decision-Making Over Drills

Technical execution is important.

However, the ability to make the correct decision under pressure often separates elite players from average players.

This is why our sessions increasingly challenge players to solve problems rather than simply perform isolated techniques.

Understanding Position-Specific Roles

Cruyff believed players should understand the game, not just their position.

We help players understand:

  • Their role in possession

  • Their role out of possession

  • Their positional responsibilities

  • The key actions required in modern football

Where Coerver and Cruyff Meet

The Ian McClurg Play Pro methodology combines the best aspects of both philosophies.

Coerver Provides the Tools

Players develop:

  • Technical excellence

  • Ball mastery

  • 1v1 ability

  • Confidence on the ball

  • Functional skills

Cruyff Provides the Purpose

Players develop:

  • Football intelligence

  • Awareness

  • Decision-making

  • Tactical understanding

  • Positional understanding

Together they create players who can both execute and think.

The Play Pro Development Process

Over time, these influences have evolved into our own player development framework:

1. Assess

Every player begins with an objective assessment.

We measure:

  • Technical performance

  • Physical performance

  • Position-specific qualities

  • Match performance

  • Football intelligence

2. Create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP)

Each player receives a personalized roadmap based on their strengths and development priorities.

3. Train

Players complete:

  • Individual technical development

  • Position-specific training

  • Tactical learning

  • Physical development

  • Home training programs

4. Track

Progress is measured through:

  • Testing

  • Video analysis

  • Match statistics

  • Performance data

  • Player reviews

5. Prepare for the Next Level

Whether the goal is academy football, scholarship opportunities or professional trials, we help players understand the standards required to progress.

The Future of Player Development

Today, many professional academies across Europe are employing dedicated Individual Development Coaches.

The reason is simple.

Elite football recognizes that players do not all learn the same way or develop at the same rate.

The future belongs to personalized player development.

That is why our mission at Ian McClurg Play Pro is simple:

Assess. Develop. Measure. Improve.

By combining the technical excellence of Coerver Coaching with the football intelligence principles of Johan Cruyff, we aim to help every player maximize their potential and prepare for the demands of the modern game.

Not every player will become a professional footballer.

But every player deserves the opportunity to receive high-level coaching, understand the standards required to progress, and become the very best version of themselves.
