Are you ready to attend Pro Trials?

Every week I speak with players who tell me they want to play professionally.
My first question is always the same.
"How do you know you're physically ready?"
Most players can't answer.
They know they work hard. They know they're committed. But very few know whether they are performing at the physical levels required by professional academies and clubs.
That is becoming a major problem.
Professional Football Is Measured
Modern football is no longer judged on opinion alone.
Professional clubs across the world use GPS technology to measure exactly what players produce during training and matches. Every sprint, every high-speed run, every metre covered and every maximum speed is recorded.
These numbers influence:
Player development
Team selection
Recruitment
Trial evaluations
Return-to-play decisions
The question is no longer simply "Can this player play?"
It is increasingly:
"Can this player consistently produce the physical outputs required at this level?"
Recent benchmarking research from our partners at STATSports allows players to compare themselves against elite professionals and top academy players by age and position. The data highlights the physical standards expected across key performance metrics such as maximum speed, total distance, sprint distance, high-speed running and number of sprints during a match.
The Reality for Most North American Players
One of the biggest mistakes I see is players believing they are ready because they dominate local games.
Unfortunately, local success doesn't necessarily prepare you for professional football.
Professional academies expect players to produce elite technical, tactical, psychological and physical performances every single week.
When Canadian players travel to the UK or Europe, many quickly discover the game is:
Faster
More intense
More demanding physically
Less forgiving of players who cannot repeatedly perform high-intensity actions
Talent alone is rarely enough. Your body has to keep up with the game.
Why We Don't Publish All the Numbers
Many websites now publish benchmark data.
The problem is that numbers without context can actually be misleading.
A winger has very different physical demands from a central midfielder.
A U14 player should not be compared with a professional first-team player.
A player's style of play, position, age and level all influence what "good" actually looks like.
That's why simply reading benchmark tables doesn't tell you whether you are ready.
What matters is understanding:
Which standards apply to your position
Which metrics matter most for your game
Where your biggest performance gaps are
How to close those gaps
That's where a structured assessment becomes valuable.
Step 1: Find Out If You're Trial Ready
Before worrying about GPS data, you should first understand whether you're developing the complete profile needed for professional football.
We've created a FREE Football Trial Readiness Assessment that helps players evaluate multiple areas of their development—not just physical performance.
The assessment identifies potential strengths, highlights development priorities and provides practical guidance on what to improve next.

Step 2: Confirm Your Performance Data
Once you've completed the assessment, the next step is to measure your actual performance.
There are two ways to do this.
Option 1 – Track Your Own Performance
Players can collect GPS performance data during matches and training using professional athlete monitoring technology, allowing them to compare their outputs against age- and position-specific standards used throughout elite football. STATSports provides benchmarking tools that compare players with academy and professional reference groups.
Option 2 – Let Us Do It For You
If you don't have access to performance tracking technology, we can help.
As part of our Professional Player Assessment process, we can:
Measure your physical performance
Analyze your data
Compare it against professional benchmarks
Produce an individual performance report
Create a personalized Individual Learning Plan
Show you exactly what you need to improve before attending professional trials
Instead of guessing where you stand, you'll know.
The Best Players Measure Everything
Professional football has become a data-driven game.
The players who improve fastest aren't always the most talented.
They're the players who understand their current level, measure their progress and deliberately work towards professional standards.
That's exactly how we help players prepare for opportunities at clubs across the UK and Europe.
The first step isn't booking a trial. The first step is knowing whether you're ready.
