The Pathway to a Pro Trial: Assessed, Prepared, Seen

A professional trial isn't something a young player wins on the day. It's earned in the months before, through how they're assessed, how they prepare, and how they're presented to clubs.
Every year I speak with families throughout the world who have a talented son or daughter and a simple question: what does it actually take to get a trial at a club in the UK or Europe? The honest answer is that talent opens the conversation, but preparation decides it.
The gap is real. A young player in a European academy is training, playing and being coached every day of the week, in an environment built around individual development. Many North American players are just as gifted, but they arrive at a trial having had far fewer quality hours on the ball. Clubs notice that within the first session.
That's why we built Pro Trials Pathways: a clear three-step route for Canadian players to get Assessed, Prepared and Seen by professional clubs across the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy. Here's how it works.
Our philosophy: develop the individual first
Everything we do starts with the individual player. Our coaching combines two of the most proven ideas in the game: the Coerver Coaching technical pyramid, which builds mastery of the ball step by step, and Johan Cruyff's positional play principles, which teach players to understand space, angles and decisions.
Technique without understanding doesn't survive a pro environment. Understanding without technique can't be executed under pressure. Clubs are looking for players who have both.
We deliver this through a five-stage system that every player follows:
Assess — measure where the player is today, technically, physically and tactically.
Benchmark — compare that against the standard professional clubs expect at their age.
Plan — build an individual training plan that closes the specific gaps.
Train — put in the work, consistently, with the right content and coaching.
Test — re-measure, so progress is proven rather than assumed.
The three steps of Pro Trials Pathways sit on top of this system.
Step 1: Assessed — know exactly where you stand
You can't plan a route without knowing your starting point. Every pro club opportunity we put a player forward for requires two things: match highlights and performance data. Opinions don't get players trials. Evidence does.
There are several ways to get assessed with us:
Highlights video plus performance data you already have from games or GPS tracking.
A performance device sent to you, so we can monitor training and matches remotely if you don't have data yet.
Player ID events, where we assess players in person.
Designated performance testing centres for a full data-led assessment.
The outcome is an honest picture of the player against the professional benchmark for their age and position. Sometimes that shows a player is close to ready. More often, it shows the specific areas that need work before a trial would be a fair test of their ability.
Step 2: Prepared — close the gap with training hours
This is where trials are really won. Once we know the gaps, each player gets an individual training plan built to reach the level clubs require.
The biggest single difference between a European academy player and most North American players is volume of quality practice. Team training two or three times a week simply isn't enough. Our standard is 500 to 1,000 ball touches every day, because that is the kind of repetition that builds the first touch, ball manipulation and composure clubs look for in the first five minutes of a trial.
Why the training app matters
Most young players can't get to a coach every day. That's exactly why our online training app is central to the pathway. It lets players add structured, high-quality hours at home, in the backyard or at the park, on the days they're not with their team.
Inside the app, players get:
Technical programmes built on our Coerver and positional play methodology, the same content used to develop players who have gone on to sign professional contracts.
Strength and conditioning sessions from one of our professional partner clubs.
Clear daily structure, so every session has a purpose and links back to the player's individual plan.
The app turns three team sessions a week into daily, deliberate practice. Over a season, that adds up to hundreds of extra hours on the ball, and that's often the difference between a player who looks out of their depth at a trial and one who looks like they belong.
For younger or developing players, our Small Group Training Program combines the app with in-person sessions, giving them coaching contact alongside the extra hours.
Step 3: Seen — the right trial at the right level
When a player's data and highlights show they're ready, we match them by ability to the right opportunity. That might be a training period with a club, a formal trial, or a pathway that combines full-time training with education.
Matching matters. Putting a player in front of a club above their current level can set them back, while the right fit lets them show their best. Our network covers clubs across the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany and Italy, and recent IM Play Pro players have signed with clubs including Atlético Central B in Spain and Pescara U19 in Italy.
We don't stop at the introduction. Families get guidance before, during and after every trial, so they know what to expect, what clubs will be judging, and what comes next.
Join me live on Zoom this Sunday
I'm hosting a free parent information session this Sunday, 1 November, at 11am ET (4pm UK), where I'll walk through Pro Trials Pathways in detail.
On the call, I'll cover:
How the process works, from first assessment to a trial at a professional club.
What clubs look for, and the standards scouts and academies assess.
The costs involved, with a clear, honest breakdown so you can plan ahead.
How we support your family before, during and after every trial.
There'll be time for your questions at the end. If your child is serious about playing professionally, this is the best place to start.
